Introducing Generation 6 RideSafer Travel Vest

The manufacturer, Safe Traffic System, has been working very hard for the past year to bring Gen5 RideSafer Travel Vests to early compliance with FMVSS 213b. The amended standard that applies to harnesses will go into full effect on December 5, 2026.

To stay within compliance with the new testing, labeling, instruction manual and customer registration requirements, we needed to make a substantial number of changes, so we have decided to launch the new products as Generation 6 (Gen6).

Stock updates

  • Small black vests are expected to be in stock in April.
  • Small blue and pink vests are expected to be back in stock in early June.

What's different, what you need to know:

The most notable changes are listed below.

  • There are no noticeable structural changes. The main changes are the new weight and height requirements, which are now compliant with FMVSS 213b.
    • We can still run validation testing with different dummy sizes, but we needed to change what we print. We still permit early crossover into larger sizes as needed for a good fit to the child's torso.
  • All sizes will have new durable plastic (polycarbonate) belt guides instead of metal. We will still have the metals (both stiff and deformable) available at no charge and by request.
  • Due to new labeling and verbiage requirements, some of the labels had to be relocated to the front of the vests.
  • Many changes to the instruction manual were made in response to the new requirements of 213b and updates to State laws.
    • All 50 States in the US and all US Territories now require compliance with the verbiage in the definitions of 213b to define the specific child restraint system. Since we are defined as a "harness," we are required to complete all compliance testing with the tether and crotch strap.
    • Crotch strap attachment graphic and verbiages have been added to the Instruction Manuals.
    • We are permitted to run validation testing (to prove it works) in a configuration different from the required one, so we are continuing to test with and without the tether and crotch strap. We feel it is important to ensure the product can be used safely across seating positions, since not all seating positions are equipped with vehicle tether anchors, and some children do not tolerate the crotch strap. What is included in the new manuals is that we "strongly recommend that the tether and crotch strap be used whenever possible."
    • The manuals will be posted to our website as soon as possible.

Size specific updates:

  • Extra Small:
    • Gen6 will not have an Extra Small (XS) size vest.
    • The currently manufactured XS vests are labeled as having a minimum weight requirement of 26.5 lbs. This change was mandatory according to new labeling requirements that became effective on December 5, 2025.
  • Small:
    • Weight specifications 26.5 to 50 lbs. (12 – 22.7 kg.).
    • Height specifications 34 to 49.2 in. (86 – 125 cm.).
  • Large:
    • Weight specifications remain 50 to 80 lbs. (22.7 – 36.3 kg.)
    • Height specifications 49.2 to 57 in. (125 – 145 cm.)
    • The size large has passed all compliance requirements by using only a single tether with the lap-only seat belt, so it can continue to be used with a lap-only seat belt as well as a lap-and-shoulder belt.
  • Extra Large:
    • Weight specifications remain 80 to 110 lbs. (36.3 – 50 kg.).
    • No minimum or maximum height requirement will be printed.
    • Only be able to be used with a lap and shoulder belt. No lap-only seat belt capability as it will ship with a single tether.
    • Upon request, dual tethers will continue to be available to international customers who need them, and for children with unique and special healthcare needs traveling in vehicles with lap-only seat belts.
